A small percentage of the population (estimated at under 3%) carry a genetic mutation in the DEC2 gene that allows them to function fully on 6 hours of sleep. For the other 97%, “training to need less sleep” means accumulating a sleep debt while developing reduced sensitivity to its symptoms — feeling less sleepy, while performance continues to decline objectively. The Dinges study from Penn demonstrates this clearly: by day fourteen of six-hour sleep restriction, participants showed severe performance deficits while rating themselves as only mildly sleepy. The signals can be trained to be ignored. The prefrontal cortex cannot be trained to work without its required recovery time.

How long does it take to build a consistent chronotype-aligned routine? Phillippa Lally’s 2009 research at University College London found that new automatic behaviors take an average of 66 days to form. More importantly, the research showed significant variability — some habits formed in 18 days, others took 254. The behaviors that formed fastest were ones with low friction (habit-environment alignment) and ones that built on existing biological tendencies rather than fighting them. A chronotype-aligned routine — one that works with biology rather than against it — should form in the lower range of that window, because the nervous system isn’t being asked to do something unnatural every morning. The resistance comes from decades of being told the chronotype is wrong. The biology was always on the right side of this.
