Most people never learn this skill because most people never separate working the problem from staring at the problem. They see a crisis in full scope — the underwater mortgage, the marriage collapsing, the terrifying diagnosis — and freeze or flail, which are really the same behavior at different speeds. Freezer and flailer both land in the same place: no piece has moved, nothing has changed status, the monster is exactly as large as when they first saw it.
What Kranz understood — what the best problem-solvers on the planet understand — is that every impossible situation is a collection of merely difficult situations. And merely difficult situations are workable. This is working the problem, one of the 12 Mindset Tools in the Resilient Wisdom system. Might be the one that switches all the others on.
What Working the Problem Actually Means — and What It Does Not
Working the problem is the disciplined process of decomposing any overwhelming challenge into individual components and addressing each one separately, without letting the scale of the whole freeze action on the parts. Each step discrete. Each step within his capability. The flood, as a single catastrophe, is overwhelming. The pipe, the valve, the drain, the pump, taken one at a time — workable.
Not optimism. Not a mindset shift. A method. And the method sits opposite two failure modes far more common, and more comfortable, than most people admit.
First failure mode: paralysis. Seeing the enormity and doing nothing. Obvious, and most people spot it in others even when they miss it in themselves.
The second is subtler, more insidious. The performance of working the problem — frantic activity touching every component at once, resolving none of them. Everywhere and effective nowhere. High Triage Reflex, the gap is minutes. Gene Kranz: minutes. The Coast Guard during Katrina: minutes. It activates almost automatically — the crisis registers, decomposition starts immediately, a piece gets picked, work begins before the emotional response has even fully landed.
Low Triage Reflex, the gap is days, weeks, or never. The guy who’s known for six months his business is failing but keeps meaning to deal with it. The woman whose marriage is deteriorating but can’t name a single thing she’s worked on. The person who needs a hard conversation with a specialist and has been “thinking about making an appointment” for four months. Low reflex doesn’t mean low intelligence or low work ethic. It means the gap between recognizing a crisis and acting on components has never been trained.
The Triage Reflex can be built. Mine ran genuinely poor for most of my twenties, if it’s worth admitting that. A crisis would land and I’d feel it comprehensively for days — talk about it, research it, build elaborate mental models of it — and during all that, the crisis would either resolve itself or deepen while I stayed occupied with the full picture. Why the Human Brain Is Built for Working the Problem — and Sabotages It Anyway

A failing business decomposes into revenue problems, cost structure, team capability, product-market fit, cash runway, creditor obligations. A health crisis: diagnosis clarity, treatment options, financial impact, daily management, emotional processing. A relationship collapse: communication failures, unmet needs, trust violations, external pressures, whether repair is even possible. List without solving. Decomposition is preparation for the work, not the work itself. Done right, though, it turns the paralysis of facing one impossible thing into traction on several difficult ones. Find the piece you can move today. Review the components. Circle the one where forward action is possible in the next 24 hours, given the resources, information, and access you have right now. Not the biggest piece. Not the most important. The one where movement is available. When the Thai cave rescue team faced the extraction problem in 2018, they didn’t start with “how do we get thirteen non-swimming children through four kilometers of flooded tunnel?” They started with “can the boys swim?” No — which led directly to the sedation protocol that saved all thirteen. They want the complete picture of the disaster before deploying anything. They want to understand the scope before acting. While they build the plan, people are drowning in their attics.
